Close, But Not Close Enough

Normanby’s 2009 season campaign took a major blow on Saturday with 10 points to 8 loss to 2^nd placed Mitchelton on Saturday at Frank Lind Oval.Normanby went into the important fixture focused on securing 2 points and continuing their quest for the finals footy in late July.

The Normanby boys started well, completing multiple sets to the kick and pressuring Mitchelton in defence. The Hounds opened the scoring with a gutsy try to hounds super sub James ‘Lowtower’ Hinchcliffe from close range. Mitchy hit back with 2 try’s before halftime to take the lead 10 points to 4.

Normanby returned from halftime with a determined 35minutes of football that delivered strong courage and commitment. A great try was scored by back-rower Craig Grimmond who burnt some sluggish Mitchy outside backs in a 30 metre race to the try line. Grimmond, who moved to outright leader ahead of blazing centre Ross Jenkins in the Hounds season try scoring tally with 6, said “if it wasn’t for the textbook overs line run and pass from ball-playing prop Jim Doyle I would have been nowhere, although he did crowd me over close to the sideline, he drew multiple defenders which opened the hole and I was away”. According to Hounds statistician Dennis Mara Ruka, whose accuracy is questionable, Doyle has thrown the last pass to Grimmond on all but one occasion this season. But the brilliance of Doyle and Grimmond wasn’t enough to get the final try needed to put Mitchy away in the dying stages. After some poor options close to the line, Normanby looked to have found the opening for a final four pointer through a huge aerial bomb attacking kick from the forwards, but the bounce just didn’t favour the Hounds on Saturday.

After probably the best all-round team effort in 2009, the Hounds dressing sheds was a sombre site, the players seemed gutted by the result and will look to punish the up coming teams in the final 4 games. Outstanding performances came from Hounds new comers Adam English, Mark Perkins & Tommy Burgess with long term hounds James Hinchcliffe and Regan Fawkes producing inspiring displays of guts and determination.

The Hounds will meet Natives this week at Purtell Park at 3.00pm. Please come and support the boys in the second last home game of the season.

The game will be followed by the annual Gentlemen’s Evening at 6pm.

In other news the London Hounds (Hemel Stags) continued there winning ways with a 68-16 win over the Bolton Bandicoots in North West London.

The Hounds would like to also reinforce the media ban on Origin on Wednesday night for all overseas Hounds until late Thursday. If anyone knows anyone ( LITERALLY ANYONE) in the Manchester area that could join a lonesome Liam Disco Daly at Manchester Walkabout, please look for the size 8 1988 Broncos jersey from 7.30pm English Summer Time barrelling cold tubes of Fosters by the main bar.
