Hounds NewsHounds victims of Gater attack Normanby Hounds were defeated 28-10 by Sandgate-Brighton Gaters in the Hounds first home game of the season.
The score line did not flatter the home team, with the gallant Hounds holding the 2007 semi finalists to 6-0 at half time, after a tough half of Rugby League. The Hounds gave no quarter to their bigger, more experienced opponents, with prop Michael “Hightower” Hinchcliffe and centre Ross Jenkins playing a physical game which left more than a few Gaters sore and sorry. In the second half the Hounds had a few defensive lapses, and the Gaters were quick to capitalise, scoring three tries in quick succession not long after the break.
The first try scorer for the Hounds was fullback Anthony Dunphy, who ran a perfect line to cross the line almost untouched early in the second half. Dunphy played a strong game at fullback, returning kicks well and giving his side plenty of direction in defence. The second try came to Mitch Gregory who, after starting from the bench, muscled up and made 9 bullocking hit ups.
Hooker Evan Donaldson led the way in defence, with 24 tackles, followed by five-eight Sandy Kirk (16) and centre Ross Jenkins (15).
In attack centre Ross Jenkins carried the ball for 11 hitups, while prop Michael “Hightower” Hinchcliffe (10) led the way for the forwards.
The players were despondent after the game but coach Mulhall was positive. In his post match talk to the boys, Mulhall told the Hounds that this result showed that they could compete at this level, and that a ten minute lapse aside, the two teams were very close in standard.
None of the Hounds faithful were disappointed with the boys, and the raucous pig pen appreciated the Hounds muscling up, and keep fighting right to the full time siren.
The Old Boys points went to Evan Donaldson (3), Anthony Dunphy (2) and Dan Finter (1).
In other results, Banyo is the outright leader in on 6 points, after beating Samford 70-0. Valleys Juniors and Deception Bay Bombers are level in second place, on 5 points, after the two teams drew 26-all. Pine Rivers, Dayboro and Nundah devils all share 4 points after Pine Rivers drew 12-all with Mitchelton, Dayboro beat Aspley 34-10 and Nundah had the bye.
