Hounds NewsNew look Hounds gallant in defeat Normanby Hounds were defeated 34-6 by Wests Mitchelton last Friday night in the first trial match of the 2008 season.
The Hounds showed great promise holding the Panthers to 12-6 at half time. Mitchelton had 26 men at their disposal, which proved the difference between the clubs, with the tiring Hounds facing fresh men being continually being injected into the action by the Mitchelton coach.
James Chan crossed the line in the 26th minute for the only Hounds try of the match. The Hounds were unlucky on a few occasions, with James Chan being held up over the line in the opening minutes, and Mitchell Chambers unlucky not to score after being unable to collect a well placed Grant Weis chip kick.
New Hounds recruit Ross Jenkins joined seasoned campaigners Dave “Tex” Murphy and Ryan Pearce in exhibiting some solid defence, giving more than a few Panthers something to remember from the game.
The Hounds faithful were given a scare with Michael “Hightower” Hinchcliffe leaving the field with a suspected broken leg. X-Rays showed that the leg was not broken, but the big man faces a wait to see how long he will be out with some ligament damage.
Former Broncos rake Barry Berrigan proved to be the Hounds nemesis, constantly looking threatening from dummy half for the Panthers, making several darting runs and directing his forwards around the field.
A terrible night out was had by the Mitchelton player who dropped the ball on four successive kick offs.
It was the first time many of the Hounds had played together, after a number of the 2007 squad either retired or moved overseas. Coach Dean Mulhall was positive about the result, saying that he was happy with the game, especially seeing Mitchelton had 26 players at their disposal to keep throwing fresh men at the weary Hounds. Mulhall said he got a good gauge of the quality of the new boys, and he was happy with the way the team had bonded after such a short time together.
The Hounds face a challenge on Saturday night, facing off against the 2007 Northside on runners-up, Banyo. The game is at Bora Ring, Banyo, 17:30 Saturday 23 February.
